New Orchestra of Washington Announces
the Departure of Co-Founder and Executive Director

Grace Cho

July 17, 2025

After twelve years of extraordinary leadership, Grace Cho, Co-Founder and Executive Director of New Orchestra of Washington (NOW), will be stepping down from her role. This is a bittersweet moment for all of us at NOW—we are saddened to see her go, but excited to watch her continue to fulfill her dreams and bring her creative brilliance to new chapters in the arts world.

As one of the visionary forces behind NOW, Grace co-founded the organization alongside Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez with the belief that classical music should be accessible, inclusive, and deeply connected to the community. Together, they built an ensemble unlike any other—intimate, innovative, and deeply human.

"Grace and Alejandro imagined and built something truly remarkable—an orchestra where excellence and equity go hand in hand," said Tom Patton, Chair of the Board of Directors. "Their leadership shaped a bold artistic identity for NOW and created a space where musicians and audiences alike could thrive. Grace's departure marks the end of an extraordinary era, and we are forever grateful for her vision, passion, and dedication."

Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, Co-Founder, Artistic Director, and Conductor, will continue in his leadership role with NOW. As a key driver of the orchestra's artistic vision and innovation, Alejandro will lead NOW into its next exciting chapter, building on the foundation he and Grace created and taking the ensemble to new levels of musical excellence.

Dianne Peterson, Past Chair of NOW and Executive Director Emerita of The Washington Chorus, added: "Grace, with her innate charm and 'grace' has left an incredible mark on our NOW community. Through her leadership, NOW has remained steadfast to its mission to make music that matters to so many. Her ability to hold true to her strong vision is a testament to her talent and heart."

The NOW Board of Directors has formed a search committee to identify the next Executive Director who will carry the orchestra's mission forward. In the meantime, the Board and staff remain committed to supporting a smooth transition.

We're also thrilled to announce that our 2025–2026 Season will be revealed soon. This next chapter promises continued artistic excellence, fresh perspectives, and powerful new collaborations that build on the foundation Grace helped create.

We wish Grace every success on her continued journey, and we look forward with gratitude and excitement to what lies ahead.
